アメリカ大統領選挙が間近に迫っています。
昔もらったヒアリングマラソンのカセットテープを聞いていたら、
カーター大統領の就任演説が出てきました。
その中に次のような一文があります。
"Within us, the people of the United States, there is evident a serious and purposeful
rekindling of confidence."
there is 以下の構造がわからないので、there is evidence of と続くのではないか、
などと考え、試しにカセットテープの音声を使ってグーグルの音声入力をやってみましたが、
やはりthere is evident と出てきます。
調べてみると、あるサイトに
This type of construction is not common in normal colloquial speech. It's very
formal-sounding. It has the same meaning as
Within us, the people of the United States, a serious and purposeful rekindling of
confidence is evident.
などと書かれていました。
ところで、
"And we will move this year a step toward our ultimate goal―the elimination
of all nuclear weapons from this Earth."
と1977年にカーター大統領は述べていたのですが、状況は変わっていないようです。
